Catch the view from the lighthouse

As you enter Macau, it is recommended to get your bearings by visiting some of the attractions around you. If you start your day from the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, you will find yourself a short walk from the Guia Municipal park which houses several smaller attractions along with a beautiful lighthouse that was built in the early 1600s. This was constructed initially to defend against any Spanish invaders but now makes a wonderful addition to an already stunning park.

To reach the lighthouse, you will need to make your way through the garden and its many floral installations until you reach the cable car. Once you are aboard the cable car you will be able to enjoy a delightful view of the city until you reach the lighthouse itself.

Enjoy some food and then the temple

Given that you are hoping to cover a lot of ground during your one day in Macau, you will need to replenish your energy once you are finished at the lighthouse.

All you need to do is travel several blocks from your current location until you can see the plethora of cafes and restaurants. Once you have arrived you can opt for either some western food or you can experiment so food that you are not too familiar with. For those in search of the most authentic experiences, try and visit a restaurant where there are no visible English signages. This will ensure you get to experience the true cuisine enjoy by the people of Macau.

Once you have sated your hunger you can visit the nearby Pau Kung Temple, which will provide you with a quick introduction to the cultural reverence that is reserved for such locations in Macau. If you are from a Western nation this is likely to be a fairly novel experience and one that is well worth enjoying and committing to memory!

If you are staying at a Macau hotel such as the Hotel Okura Macau, they will be able to assist you in planning and extraordinary outing as well.

Explore the Monte Fort

As you make your way through Macau it quickly becomes apparent this a place that is between two worlds. One that is modern and racing into the future while the other resides dormant and steadily anchored into the past. For example, an ancient church such as the St. Pauls Church can reside in Macau while in the distance an ultra-luxury casino thrums with activity. It is a similar story at the Monte Fort. Built by Jesuits to defend against any pirates and invaders, it was once a stronghold. Now all that remains are empty walkway and cannons that have long fallen into disuse. It is now more often recognized as the site of the Museum of Macau. This museum now allows people to walk amongst the history of Macau and gain an in-depth understanding of how this landmass grew from being a small colony of the Portuguese to be considered the ‘Vegas of the East’.
